How was the beginning in Jiu-jitsu?
I started as soon as I started working, which is March 2003. I needed the money because I train in Antwerp, which is a 1-hour drive … and classes weren’t cheap at that time either. Luckely that has changed!

How many times a week do you train?
Only 2 to 3 times. Tuesday and Thursday are my set days, and whenever I can, I go on Sundays. I like the Sunday training a lot, since it’s only rolling!

Are those the only days people can train at Exit?
Absolutely not. We are very lucky at Exit, because – thanks to Maurice Goffart and Ken Vangilbergen, our teachers – there is a training every single day of the week. In Antwerp on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. In Leuven on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday! There is even a training on public holidays! :o

You seem to compete a lot!
Well, Exit is a competition focussed club, and I like it very much. I can safely say we have several fighters who are amongst the top fighters in BJJ and grappling in Belgium, Germany and Holland. We try to go at every competition we can, so we’re always training to prepare for one competition or the other.

You must be very proud of your results, they seem quite good!
Well, I am, but not as proud as I am of our Team results. More often than not we’re the best team at competitions, even when we only have a small competition team. I’m also very proud when our white belts perform good at tournaments, it shows we don’t just have a few good fighters at Exit, but deliver fighters with a very strong base over and over again!

There is a movie on Youtube where you break the arm of your opponent in competition. Could you tell us more about that?
It happened at the last “Lock and Choke” grappling tournament in Germany. I was doing the one-hand Americana that both my teacher Maurice as Felipe don’t like too much … but it works. ;o) I guess my opponent didn’t believe in it either, so he waited to long to tap. At the moment he tapped, he stopped resisting (or he felt it went too far) and the ligaments in his elbow snapped. You hear the noise in the Youtube-movie, and I still hear it when I think about it. Not the nicest sound I every heard. He was in a lot of pain and went to the hospital, but came back after some hours with a bracelet around his arm. Afterwards I could read on a German forum that he didn’t understand why he didn’t tap, but that he would be allright! I hope he is training and fighting again!

Did you ever get injured in competitions?
I had my share of small and slightly more serious injuries, both during training as in competitions. But I – luckely – never broke anything. I am a regular “customer” at the osteopath (who puts your bones and joints in the right place), especially for my neck and back.

Do you train anything besides Jiu Jitsu?
Not at the moment. I would like to start swimming to become a little stronger, keep my weight in balance and most importantly: get a better stamina! But I couldn’t go train something else, if I have more time to train, it will be Jiu Jitsu.
