Shoulder injury - Jiu Jitsu
GOT THIS MESSAGE TODAY, it's not the first time someone ask me this, so I decided to share:
Oi senhor! Eu sou Aaron. I have always been inspired by your jiu jitsu, but even more so after I saw your documentary on you tube and learned that you have experienced a shoulder dislocation. I myself have had this problem and it caused me to stop jiu jitsu when I was 15. It was my dream to be a jiu jitsu champion. Last year I gained the courage to hit the mats again telling myself no matter what I will not give up and I will develop a style based on using techniques that I could avoid hurting my shoulder. I am currently a white belt and I train at Barbosa headquarters in Sao Paulo. I don't want to bore you with too much writing but I want to ask you something very important to me. Do you have any advice on what I can do to improve my shoulder? Or some techniques that I should work on? Any advice will be greatly appreciated and worth more than gold. Thank you for your inspiration sensei and keep kicking ass! OSS!!!!!!

Re: Shoulder injury - Jiu Jitsu
Hello Aaron, the first time I dislocated my shoulder I was 15 as well, after that It happened again 4 times, but luckly haven't happen for the last 10 years. I have learn not to expose my shoulders to danger. Of course it depends on each case, not sure in wich direction your shoulder pop out, but for me I have to avoid any technique that my arm go to far from my body. The strengh exercises have become part of my routine and for a long time I did it daily and currently I make once or twice a week. The key while training is, if you have doubt, retreat. Of course, must important, do not ignore an advice of a doctor, who is probabily the best person to advice you :) Keep in touch, Felipe

Re: Shoulder injury - Jiu Jitsu
Thanks for the advice. I have been training 3 hours a day now and so far so good. At first I would only train with one arm with my bad arm in my belt and I actually was able to fight pretty well, it really helped my defense, and now I do exactly what you said, I just focus on keeping it out of harms way when I fight with my arm exposed and if I have to tap I do it very early. I tell all of my partners before we roll to be mindful. I am starting to look at the injury not so much like a hassle and kind of as a blessing as crazy as it seems. It has forced me to fight with my mind, very rarely do I use strength to overpower my opponents but I really focus on learning the technique, leverage, and momentum. So if any one has a similar issue my advice is similar to Mestre Felipe. Don't give up, if it really is your passion you will find a way and discover yourself a new. God Bless!

Re: Shoulder injury - Jiu Jitsu
I have a question on a slightly different topic. Does anyone knows a place to get good quality rashguards from? A store that you have already tried? Also do i need to lookout for something when buying a rashguard? im new to BJJ, recently started training in NoGi.

Re: Shoulder injury - Jiu Jitsu
I would advice to just go to a big retail sports store. They often have very cheap surfing gear and what we call rash guards is actually nothing else but sun protection for wave surfers.
