(Português abaixo) In 2006, Rodrigo Comprido, Michelle Matta and Felipe Costa volunteered the create the FIRST in the WORLD social project for teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for visually impaired kids. Later on that year, João Marcello joined the group helping with the classes.
Over 50 students passed in the mats inside Benjamin Constant Institute located at Urca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The kids participated not only in self defense and sport Jiu-Jitsu classes but they also had chance to learn about citizenship. Many of them got the opportunity to compete in a local tournaments against kids that could see and manage to bring medals back home.
In 2012, rumors that the Institute was going to be close by the government and the lack of cooperation of the staff of the Sport administration leaded to the end of the classes. Luckly by than some of the students had enough experience to join "regular" academies and could keep training.
It was nearly 6 years of a great experience and fun for both teachers and students. An experience that will stay forever on the mind and heart of the one's who volunteered their times to be there and help us.
No ano de 2006, Rodrigo Comprido, Michelle Matta e eu nos voluntariamos para criar o primeiro projeto social no MUNDO para crianças deficientes visuais, pouco depois, João Marcelo se uniu a nós ajudando com as aulas.
Cerca de 50 alunos passaram pelos tatames do Instituto Benjamin Constant localizado no bairro do Rio de Janeiro, na URCA.
As crianças tiveram não apenas aulas de defesa pessoal e Jiu-Jitsu esportivo, mas também de cidadania. Muitos deles tiveram a oportunidade de competir em tourneios locais contra crianças "videntes" e conseguiram trazer medalhas de volta para casa.
Em 2012, boatos de que o Instituto seria fechado pelo governo e a falta de apoio da direção de educaçao física levaram ao fim das aulas. Alguns alunos, já mais experientes para ingressar em academias "normais"puderam continuar treinando.
Foram quase 6 anos de uma experiência divertida e maravilhosa tanto para os alunos, como professores. Um experiência que vai ficar nos corações e mentes dos que voluntariaram tempo para ajudar, para sempre!
